Uncle Seth reunite to cover Dolly Parton's "Jolene"

Early 2000s indie roots-rock band Uncle Seth reunited recently to record a boisterous and bluesy version of Dolly Parton’s classic “Jolene”, as a tribute for her induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame this year. The single will be available via all major digital services on November 11.

Formed in Scarborough in 1999, Uncle Seth were a staple of the Ontario music scene until their break-up in 2007. During their time together they released an LP, an EP, and a handful of singles. The band became darlings of the early independent podcast community, which helped them score showcases at podcasting events and music conferences in Toronto, Kingston, Boston, and New York. No strangers to reinterpreting songs by iconic women, Uncle Seth received a Toronto Independent Music Award in 2006 for their version of Joni Mitchell’s “Both Sides, Now.”

Uncle Seth went through a variety of line-up changes over their time, and the new recording brings together players from across the history of the band. Mainstay members Amaya Thompson (lead vocals), Jeff Jones (guitar), and Jay Moonah (harmonica) are featured on “Jolene”. Moonah has recently achieved notoriety with his one-man blues band Broke Fuse, including a nomination for New Artist at the 2022 Maple Blues Awards. Jenn Kee, a founding Uncle Seth member and veteran of Classic Albums Live and Brit Floyd, provides backing vocals. The recording is rounded out by a robust rhythm section featuring Drew Moncarz (bass), Mark Kitchen (percussion), and dual drummers Chris Patheiger and Frank Baraczka.  Renowned producer/engineer Brian Moncarz (known for his work with Alice Cooper, Our Lady Peace, The Trews, Julian Taylor, Philip Sayce, and countless others) recorded the band at Hapi Hipi Studios in King City, with Jones producing and mixing the track.
